What should Singaporeans do after orthodontic braces treatment?

It's not easy going through the process of Orthodontic braces treatment to get the perfect smile. You had to wear the braces and rubber bands diligently to ensure the forces were consistently applied. You had to exercise patience as the teeth gradually moved into the correct position and alignment. You had to clean your teeth carefully around the brackets and wires in order to ensure no bits of food got stuck in between. Finally after years of treatment, your braces treatment is finally complete and you have achieved a beautiful smile and straight teeth. However, even though your treatment is done, you still need to take care of your teeth to preserve the day zero perfect smile when your braces were first removed. Here are some tips to ensure your oral care routine is up to the mark.

* Diligently wear retainers

Retainers are essential for preserving the alignment and position of the teeth once they have been straightened. Retainers prevent the teeth from shifting back into the original position and reversing the effects of the braces treatment. It's also important to avoid hard and crunchy foods such as nuts and chocolate for the first couple of weeks as your teeth adjust to the removal of braces.

* Consistently brush and floss

Brushing and flossing are a corner stone of a daily regimen for oral healthcare and hygiene. Brushing and flossing help to clean plaque and unwanted food bits off the surface of the teeth surface. Excessive build up of plaque can lead to gingivitis and gum disease.

* Regularly attend dental checkups

Regular dental checkups are necessary to ensure oral and dental health. During dental exams, the dentist will perform professional cleaning and dental x-rays to see spaces in between the teeth that are obstructed from view. This helps to detect cavities or other problems early and treat them in a timely manner.
